Steve McLean
Stephen McLean  Growing up in various places across Canada was sometimes difficult but a rewarding challenge for Stephen.  The youngest of three, he always loved art and creativity, which eventually led him to the School of Industrial Design at Carleton University.  Combining these new skills with his love for Biology opened up may new dimensions for his art.  Having worked with various mediums in the past, stone is definitely his newest passion.

“It is by far the most challenging and rewarding medium I have ever worked in.  Every cut, chisel and shape is much more permanent.”

A pilot by trade Stephen has spent several years traveling the North from his home in Yellowknife.  The people and the beauty that he encounters while visiting the Northern Communities inspire his beautiful creations. By a chance meeting Stephen was taught the art of carving by a group of artists form Tuktoyaktuk;

“Blake Noksana, Bill Nasogaluak and Derrald Taylor have helped me grow as a carver over the past few years.  I am always learning and they are all great artists and patient teachers”

In 2005 at the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, Stephen was voted the “Emerging Artist of the Year” for his carving works.  “I would have to say that the events in my life shape my works.  The birth of my son, the loss of my Father, the beauty and chaos around us everyday is reflected in what I do.”
